Relaxation for students in the greenery in and around Leuven

Being in the middle of bustling city life is great, but sometimes you just want to escape from it all. You don’t actually have to go far for that in Leuven. We have mapped out a number of green spots in and around Leuven for you, enjoy!

1. Botanical garden Leuven

You can find the Botanical Garden in the center of Leuven. At 200 years old, it is the oldest botanical garden in Belgium. In this beautiful garden there is also a greenhouse complex of 450m² where you can find herbs, aquatic and container plants, but also various tropical and subtropical species. Definitely worth a visit. This garden is not always open, so it is best to check the opening hours online.

2. Provincial domain Kessel-Lo

You can have fun with friends on this domain. You will find tennis and sports fields, pedal boats, a skate park, a petanque court, etc. You have to rent certain fields, but you can use many things freely. The perfect place to go with your friends when the weather is nice. The domain is just a 7-minute bike ride from Leuven station

3. Bellefroid Ponds

The Bellefroid ponds are located just a 10-minute walk from the Vaartkom. The domain has only been owned by the government and accessible to the public since 2019. There are 2 large ponds and hiking trails on the domain for walking. The perfect place to explore and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

4. Arenberg Castle

The Arenberg Castle was built in the 14th century and is currently used by the Faculty of Engineering of KU Leuven. It is the heart of a green campus for the Science Technology group. Unfortunately, the domain is only accessible to students at the KUL. So if you study at the KUL, it is definitely worthwhile to visit here.
